BY ELISE SILVER AND HEATHER RUSSELL
As new parents embark on the journey of parenthood, the postpartum period can bring a whirlwind of emotions, challenges, and adjustments. To provide insights and support, we’ve reached out to several experienced postpartum doulas, asking them two important questions about navigating this transformative time.
Navigating the Postpartum Period:
Question 1: What is your number one tip for new parents navigating the postpartum period?
Ask and Accept Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out for support! Whether it’s with meals, dishes, or simply holding the baby while you catch some much-needed rest, embracing help can make all the difference. Use this time to recharge, whether it’s with a nap, a refreshing shower, or whatever helps you feel like yourself again.
Communicate Openly: Keep the lines of communication open with your partner, doula, and family. Share your needs, delegate responsibilities, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Together, you can navigate this journey with greater ease and support.
Give Yourself Grace: Remember, you’re doing an incredible job! Acknowledge your efforts and accomplishments during this challenging time. Parenthood comes with its share of ups and downs, so be kind to yourself and celebrate your victories, big and small.
Rest as Often as You Can: Prioritize rest whenever possible. Whether it’s stealing a few moments for a quick power nap or carving out time to relax and unwind, make self-care a priority. Your well-being is essential for navigating the postpartum period with resilience and strength.
Question 2: Can you share a specific technique or strategy that you find particularly effective in helping parents cope with the challenges of the postpartum period?
Prioritizing and Focusing: When facing a tough moment with your baby, ask yourself, “What is the one most important thing I need to do for the next 30 minutes?” Focus on that task and don’t worry about anything beyond that timeframe. Prioritize and focus on one thing at a time to navigate through rough spots effectively.
Finding Time for Self and Partner: It’s crucial for parents to carve out time for themselves and their partner amidst the demands of parenthood. Recognize that the first few months are a transitional period, and finding moments to connect and recharge can make the journey feel less overwhelming.
Setting Expectations with Support System: In addition to seeking professional postpartum support, effectively communicate expectations with family and friends. Let them know how they can assist with tasks like laundry, dishes, or sibling/pet care, allowing parents to focus on bonding with their newborn and adjusting to their new roles.
Establishing Routine and Staying Open: Establishing a routine can provide structure and stability during the postpartum period. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and remain open to the changes that parenthood brings. Embrace the journey and savor the precious moments along the way.
Navigating the postpartum period comes with its unique set of challenges, but with the guidance and support of experienced postpartum doulas, new parents can approach this phase with confidence and resilience. Incorporating these expert tips into your journey can make all the difference in embracing the joys of parenthood.
