The Case for Cloth Diapers

BY ELISE SILVER AND HEATHER RUSSELL

Welcoming a new baby brings a whirlwind of choices! From selecting the right obstetrician or midwife to deciding whether to breastfeed, parents are faced with many significant decisions. One important option that often gets overlooked is how you’ll diaper your little one.

While disposable diapers have become the go-to choice for many, readily available in a variety of brands at your local grocery store, you might be surprised to learn that cloth diapers are making a delightful comeback!

Back in the 1960s, when my parents were babies, many families relied on diaper services that would pick up soiled diapers each week and deliver fresh, clean ones in return. This nostalgic method is experiencing a revival today!

In the Triangle area, I’ve noticed many of my clients, even those with twins, choosing cloth diapers. The truth is, cloth diapers have come a long way since then, offering modern conveniences that make them a practical and eco-friendly option for today’s families!

But Why Choose Cloth When Disposables Are So Easy?

Using cloth diapers can be just as convenient as disposables! Not only do cloth diapers have a positive environmental impact, but they also significantly reduce the waste generated by disposable options. It’s estimated that disposable diapers can take upwards of 100 years to break down in landfills, contributing to our growing environmental crisis. In contrast, cloth diapers are made from natural fibers, free from the plastics, dyes, and perfumes commonly found in disposables. When they’ve reached the end of their life cycle, cloth diapers, made from 100% cotton, break down much faster, making them a healthier choice for your baby’s sensitive skin.

From my experience, babies in cloth diapers have incredibly soft and smooth bottoms, a stark contrast to the rashes I’ve often seen on those using disposables. For babies with skin sensitivities, chemical-free cloth diapers can be the perfect solution.

Moreover, cloth diapers are a cost-effective alternative to disposables. If you’ve already welcomed your little one, you’re likely aware of how quickly a week’s worth of disposable diapers can pile up. Now, imagine that multiplied in landfills—it’s quite alarming!

Interestingly, babies who wear cloth diapers often potty train six months to a year earlier than those in disposables. This might be because children in cloth can more easily recognize when they are wet. When babies transition out of diapers sooner, it contributes to the overall savings associated with cloth diapering—though this can vary from child to child.

For parents interested in exploring cloth diapers, a fantastic resource is All About Cloth Diapers. This site offers a comprehensive guide, including a “Cloth Diapers 101” section that covers everything from the basics of different types of diapers to tips on washing and care. It’s a great starting point for anyone looking to learn more and find secondhand supplies, making cloth diapering both accessible and budget-friendly.

Ultimately, cloth diapering presents a viable option for families looking to save money, reduce diaper rashes, and benefit the environment. With so many compelling reasons to consider, why not give it a try?
