Question: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to become a physical therapist?
Answer: I have been a practicing PT now for almost 18 years which is hard for me to believe! I started out doing Orthopedics but was introduced to the world of women’s health when I myself was referred to a PT following the birth of my son. So my first exposure to this type of therapy was not as a clinician, but as a patient. I like to think that has allowed me to really connect with my patients over the years, because I have been on the other side!
Question: How did you decide to start a mobile physical therapy practice, and what advantages does it offer to your clients in Raleigh and nearby areas?
Answer: As women, we often juggle multiple roles and regrettably, tend to overlook self-care. For some women, getting out of the house for therapy is challenging on most days. My mobile practice offers a more convenient solution, ensuring that women can access the care they deserve.
Question: Could you share the unique aspects of your practice that make it stand out in the field of pelvic floor rehabilitation for women?
Answer: Unfortunately, SOME therapists out there doing women’s health hone in exclusively on the pelvic floor. Although the pelvic floor IS a crucial piece of the puzzle, it is just ONE piece. I pride myself on taking a much more holistic, full body approach to care. I also feel strongly about empowering my patients on their journey to recovery. I provide tons of patient education and pretty much empty out my “tool box”, so that women have long term strategies and tips and tricks for managing their health issues.
Question: What types of services do you offer, and how do you tailor them to meet the specific needs of your clients?
Answer: I offer birth prep sessions for women wanting to learn more about the pelvic floor and different ways to prepare for their upcoming labor and delivery. I also see women postpartum and we do a comprehensive assessment and establish a treatment plan based on their short and long term goals. Outside of pregnancy, I treat women at all different stages of life! Treatment is always customized to the patient and their needs.
Question: How do you ensure that the treatment provided in the comfort of a client’s own home is as effective as in a traditional clinical setting?
Answer: When I go to a client’s home, I bring a portable treatment table along with some PT “tools” that I have grown accustomed to working with. My clients decide in advance usually where they want me to set up; typically any room where we will have privacy and the ability to converse undisturbed. Personally, I don’t believe that to deliver quality care, I need any big or fancy equipment.
Question: What are some common issues or conditions that women might face, which could benefit from pelvic floor therapy?
Answer: Pelvic pain, prolapse, urinary or fecal incontinence, urinary frequency/urgency, pain with intercourse, diastasis recti, constipation…the list goes on!
Question: Can you explain the importance of pelvic floor health for women and the impact it can have on their overall well-being?
Answer: In many countries (not ours) women are entitled to 6, FREE, postpartum PT visits. As many of us have come to learn, postpartum care here in the US is often lacking. The focus seems to quickly shift from women’s healthcare to that of the newborn. OF COURSE, newborn care is crucial and should be a priority, but so should we! Oftentimes postpartum, we assume what we are feeling is “normal”. And although it may be quite common, it might not be normal. If we accept issues like incontinence or pain with sex as a normal side effect of pregnancy, we often suffer in silence. As we age, these issues that may once have been small, can become exacerbated. There is quite a stigma around many women’s health related issues and that saddens me. Pelvic floor health for women is crucial in both the short and long term. Addressing issues that may seem inconsequential now, may ultimately improve quality of life and prevent bigger issues later on.
Question: How do you educate your clients about the exercises and techniques they can do at home to complement their therapy sessions?
Answer: We practice all recommended exercises together to make sure they are being done correctly. I also have an online program that allows me to send pictures and videos of exercises to clients. They are able to monitor their compliance with the program and can send me messages or updates along the way.
Question: What advice would you give to women who are considering pelvic floor therapy but may be hesitant or unsure about it?
Answer: Let’s start the conversation! I offer FREE phone consultations and this for me is a crucial first step. Let’s make sure we are the right fit for each other.
Question: How do you stay updated with the latest advancements and research in pelvic floor therapy to ensure you provide the best care for your clients?
Answer: PT’s are required nationally to do continuing education annually. I attend in person and online courses that relate to the field of women’s health. I regularly read up on the latest research and am always listening to a pelvic health podcast (which amazingly, there are many nowadays). I have many colleagues in the area and we often collaborate and share new ideas and troubleshoot as needed.
Question: When do you recommend a woman starts pelvic floor physical therapy?
Answer: At any point in time! It’s never too early or too late to start learning about the pelvic floor.
Question: Do you accept insurance?
Answer: I do not accept insurance. Unfortunately, insurance carriers have placed many restrictions on PT’s across the board. We are limited in how much time we can spend with patients, how often we can see them and even what we can see them for. Insurers don’t cover wellness or preventative care (like birth prep). In a cash based model, I can treat how I want to treat and deliver the care that women deserve, without the restrictions imposed by most carriers. All appointments are one hour in duration. When insurance is being used, there are often copays and sometimes very high deductibles. Bills may come in months and months after treatment has concluded. With a cash based model, you know what to expect up front. There are no hidden costs or fees. You won’t be getting any surprise bills. And because I can spend longer amounts of time with each client, I often end up seeing them for FEWER visits than in a traditional office setting. All of this to say, you may ultimately end up spending less money. I AM able to provide patients with Superbill receipts that they can try and submit to their insurance carrier. IF you have out of network benefits, you may be able to get partial, or full reimbursement, based on your individual plan. This is something you could inquire about by calling your insurance company in advance. I do accept cash and HSA cards as well.
